Two Things That Set Middle Ridge Apart

Middle Ridge has a State Heritage Place with a listed garden, and a major high-voltage substation that carries a lot of Toowoomba’s power. Neither means your tree is off limits, but both change who you need to ask.

Gabbinbar, 344–376 Ramsay Street

Gabbinbar is a State Heritage Place, entered on the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992, in the Toowoomba Regional Council area. Its register entry lists the entrance drive and “gardens and mature trees” among its components. Tree work at or beside it may need state approval. The rule is explained once on our Harlaxton page, and we haven’t confirmed whether any particular job counts.

Powerlink’s Middle Ridge substation

Powerlink describes its Middle Ridge 330/275/110 kV substation, established in 1965, as an essential bulk supply point for Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. Powerlink says its transmission lines typically sit in registered easements on private land, with safety requirements for activities on or near an easement. We haven’t mapped which Middle Ridge blocks have one.

Who To Ask, Depending On The Tree

Where the tree is Who to ask First step
At Gabbinbar, or on a property beside it The Queensland Government’s heritage team Search the Queensland Heritage Register by address and ask before booking work.
Near high-voltage transmission lines or towers, or on an easement Powerlink Call (07) 3866 1313 in office hours, or the easement maintenance team on 1800 635 369.
Near the street powerlines or the service line to your house Ergon Energy Don’t trim it yourself. Ergon’s advice is on the home page.
In a park or on the verge Toowoomba Regional Council Council trees are protected by Local Law 1, so don’t prune or remove one without written permission.

If a tree is near high-voltage lines, treat it as dangerous and leave it alone. Ergon says never to trim trees near powerlines yourself, and the same caution applies near anything larger. Ask first, and mention the lines when you contact us.

Before You Book In Middle Ridge

  • Look up your address on the Queensland Heritage Register, and check whether Gabbinbar or another listed place is next door.
  • Check the title or ask Powerlink whether an easement crosses your block.
  • Find out whether the tree is yours, a neighbour’s, or a council tree on the verge or in a park.
  • If the work is tied to building or subdividing, ask the council what applies first.
  • Note what stands in the way, such as fences, sheds, slopes and the access path, and take a few photos.
  • Send those details through the form, call 0419 136 537, or use the contact page.

The work we list is on our services page, and the neighbouring Kearneys Spring page covers its own local checks.
